4K video of a recent photoshoot I put together with a Calgary Ballerina Ciara Stewart.

I have done a number of fashion shoots with the very talented Ciara in the past. These had all been fashion shoots though and during that time I learnt a lot from her about her dance background. I have a lot of dance training myself so when I meet others that have spent a lot of their life in dance it connects with a special place in my heart.

So along with studying at the Alberta Ballet for many years Ciara has been Miss Calgary 2 years running and also competed for Miss Universe Canada.
I really wanted a dancer / model that understood lighting and had an extensive dance background for this concept and Ciara delivered over and above what I initially had in mind.

It was really intersting using fashion lighting with a dance subject. Due to the speeds that Ciara was moving, having her jumping on a trampoline added another new dynamic for us. Shutter speeds, flash speeds, recycle times and focusing were more challenging. The studio was purposely as dark as possible so that there wasn’t any light contamination from overhead lighting so this really tested all of the equipment used. It is times like this that you really see the benefit of using high end equipment.

For the main light I used a Broncolor Para 133 and then had a couple of other modifiers on separate 800 watt heads to add fill to the body when wanted.
I actually wanted a lot of gradation down the body and for the face and shoulders to be properly exposed.
With the fabric that Ciara wore I had visions of an angel or a bird flying towards the sun with the light falling off down her body leaving the feet and lower leg dark.

In the studio we set up a 14 foot wide trampoline in the cove so that we had a nice clean white background while having very controllable light in a studio environment. We then lit the background with color when needed which were various shades of red.
